Many of us feel compelled to stand up and say something right now but the words are not easy to come by.
It’s not always easy to stand up for what you believe in. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try.
What if your voice could make change. What if your example could benefit so many.
When I was in college I took a mandatory class about Institutional Racism. Going into the class as a white woman I was incredibly naive about how our systems have perpetrated racism. My white privilege had kept me from seeing the world for what it truly is.
As a social worker I see how abundant white privilege is. This has become incredibly clear during the pandemic. The unequal treatment and access to opportunities based on skin color is deplorable.
As a parent I do speak to my son about race. Perhaps I was naive again in thinking that all parents do this. Do I do this because I am a social worker? Do I do this because I have been educated? Do I do this because this is a concern that I have specifically for my family? Do I do this because my son is one person who I can make a difference with?
Challenge yourself today to be the difference even if it is just with one person.
No mother should ever have to worry if their child will make it home each night.
