I wasn’t my best self. I was breaking. I was there but never truly showing up. It is impossible to truly take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves!

Just days after buying my home I had a moment. A what next moment. There I was, my divorce was finally official. I was a full time single parent and I was sitting in the middle of the house that I had worked my butt off to buy by myself. I had been working on this adventure of becoming the best version of myself and creating the best life that I could. I was checking items off of my to do list left and right. I had started grad school. I bought the house and we were already looking for a puppy to make the house a home.
There were boxes stacked in every room and I was beyond exhausted. But in that moment all I could think about was, what next.
So I dug through a box and found a pack of post it’s and a sharpie. On each post it I wrote on adventure that I wanted to accomplish on my bucket list. I stuck those post it’s on the wall in what would become my office. Those blue post it’s are still hanging on the wall. I am sure that putting post it’s on the wall of a newly painted home is a homeowner fail but they are still there.
One of those post it’s said “go kayaking”. Well just over two years later I am proud to share that I accomplished that adventure. The best part is that I accomplished this adventure with a few of my closest friends!
In life there are endless possible adventures that we can take. We all have a bucket list somewhere and now is the time to start working on actually living each of those adventures.

You Are Not a Bad Mom For Taking Time For Yourself!
Sometimes I actually need to say this to myself. We all know that self care is important. We all know that it we need to make time for ourselves. We all know that the cliche that if we don’t take care of yourselves then how can we take care or anything else?
We all know all of this. But we also know about Mom guilt. We spend every minute of every day worrying about our kids and all of the things that we are doing right or wrong.
But is showing our kids how to make time for themselves really wrong? Is it wrong for our children to see that we do take care of ourselves? Is it wrong for our kids to see that grown ups need time for fun too? Or that grown ups just need time with other grown ups?
You are not a bad Mom for taking time for yourself!
Go ahead, read it again. Then share this message with a friend because every single mom you know doubts herself sometimes. Even that mom that looks like she has it all together. Please send this to her. Share it on your page, share it on your story, or shout it from the mountain top. But most important whisper it to yourself when that mom guilt starts to set in.
During this unprecedented time moms are working, keeping our families safe and even teaching our own kids. This is not what we were looking for when we said that we wanted to have it all. We can try to balance everything that is expected of us right now. Or we can just slow down and take a step back and just try to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of everyone else. We need to make time for ourselves.
You are not a bad mom for taking time for yourself!

Building Your Tribe
When you work in a helping profession you will be exposed to tragic stories and you will need to lean on someone as you work through these stories. Building your tribe of coworkers and mentors so that you have people to turn to when faced with difficult situations. Make connections and support one another!
During this difficult time it is more important than ever to have an incredible tribe of women who are also working in helping professions to surround yourself with! You can connect with people that you have met in person, or women that you follow online, or women you listen to on podcasts. You can connect by sending direct messages, emails, text messages or even picking up the phone. You can encourage other women like you. You can ask questions of women who have gone before you.
Now is an incredible time to build connections and to establish relationships! We may need to be social distant but that does not mean that we need to be social isolated. Take this time to learn from someone!

Be Creative and Give Yourself Grace
In a time of uncertainty we need to be creative and try things differently. We may need to resort to “the way we used to do things”. We may not be able to rely on doing things they way we always do. But that is ok! Let this be a time of growth! Remember to be kind to yourself and to those around you! A little grace goes a long way.
Doctors, therapists and social workers are using telehealth style sessions to check in with their clients. Many organizations are using zoom to host team meetings. We have all had to try to navigate doing things in different ways. The “normal” way that we do things no longer works. So it is time to be mindful and intentional and figure out new ways to work.

Working From Home During A Crisis
Many of us have quickly had to shift to working at home. Working at home in this way comes with an incredible set of challenges! If you always wanted to work from home know that this is not what working from home typically looks like.
We are all in survival mode during a critical time and we are working at home out of necessity. We are all doing the best we can to work the best we can while many of us are also trying to guide our children with distance style learning. Be kind. Be patient. Know that we are all in this together!
Wake up and get dressed!
In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #3 Dressing To Accomplish Your Goals I chat about the importance of getting showered and dressed to make yourself ready for anything. Many people are barely showering and not dressing. You still need to take care of yourself and prepare for your day.
Create a schedule
It is important to try to keep a schedule. From scheduling set hours to working and setting set times for self care. In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #47 Setting Professional Boundaries I share a number of ideas on how to set boundaries between work and home.
Be flexible
These are unprecedented times and we are unsure of how to perform our essential work without the tools and resources that we need. Be flexible and be willing to learn new things. This is a time to get creative!
Encourage yourself
In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode #46 Ten tips to get through a hard time I talk about being patient with yourself, the importance of self care, and reminding yourself that you have been through hard times before.
Stay connected
In the Adventures of a New You podcast Episode # 41: How Reset When You Are Having A Hard Time I share the importance of staying connected and building your tribe. We all need to have people that we can turn to and that we can count on. We need to surround ourselves with people that we can learn from and grow with. Find your people and do whatever you can to keep your relationships thriving. Use technology like facetime, zoom, skype or regular old phone calls to stay connected to friends, family and colleagues.

Lower the Bar and Give Yourself Grace!
We are all in a state of crisis and just trying to do the best that we can. We are juggling lots of changes and trying to accomplish everything from the safety of home. We may lose our patience. We may be disappointed in ourselves and others. We may be scared or anxious. We may just be exhausted. So lower the bar and give yourself grace!
We won’t be perfect and frankly things won’t even be pretty. This is a time to try to slow down and become more mindful of how we are spending our time and how expending that energy makes us feel.
There are demands from work, home, and school all on us at this time. Plus the demands of trying to keep ourselves and our families safe and healthy.
In these hectic times it is essential that we continue to take care of ourselves and meet our own needs.
If you need help figuring out how to meet your own needs and go from surviving to actually living please reach out or follow me!

Social Workers Are First Responders
When you think about first responders who do you think of? Fire? Police? EMS? But what about the social workers that are out everyday checking on the safety of people in their community?
We are all still out here and some of our jobs have even become much harder than they would have even in our worst day! We have extra work, less supplies, and it is incredibly hard to find community providers. But we are all doing the best we can and we do this all while carrying a notebook! So if you know a social worker thank then today! If you are a social worker, thank you!
We appreciate all of the first responders that are out and working to care for our community during this trying time!
