Pivoting Your Plans

Sometimes we have master plans for our lives but we have to pivot those plans. After researching wedding photographers when I was planning my wedding I was so intrigued that I wanted to be a wedding photographer.

Shortly after I became a mom and I was working hard to learn the industry but with an infant this just wasn’t a good fit for me. So then I shifted my focus to photographing children and families. I set a goal of becoming a full time photographer by the time my son went to kindergarten.

I had to pivot that idea again when I became a full time single parent. At that point I knew that I needed a career that was consistent, reliable and had excellent benefits. So I invested my full self back into my social work career.

For a few years I still had my photography business and took sessions on nights, weekends, and government holidays. But then I decided to go back to school. I once again pivoted as I started grad school.
I did all of this while working full time, parenting full time and then pursuing my goal of buying a house.
I know what you are thinking. I’m nuts. Maybe I am. But what you should be thinking is it’s ok to change your plans! It’s ok to make new goals.

You should also be thinking what goals am I working towards? What is my next big thing?

I’m not suggesting that you decide to take on the world today. But I am suggesting that you think about this day and how you will look back on this day and remember today as the day that you decided that you were going to go for it.

Today we are juggling a lot by being at home. But just because we are juggling a lot does not mean that we can’t make a plan and have a clear goal. We can take steps to go from this state of being in survival mode to truly living!
